Simultaneous Bilateral Rupture of the Extensor Mechanism Around the Knee: A Multi-Centre Series of Twelve Cases
Steven Cutts
A search of medical records in four centres in East Anglia revealed 12 patients with bilateral simultaneous rupture of the knee extensor mechanism. This included both rupture of the quadriceps tendon superior to the patella and rupture of the patellar tendon inferior to the patella. Fractures of the bony patella were not included. 7 patients were admitted to James Paget University Hospital, Great Yarmouth, two to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, two to West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds, and one to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn. We reviewed the mechanism of injury, patient demographics and also the technique of surgical repair employed.
